A Christmas song for the Christmas blues

It’s not easy to feel Christmas cheer when things are going so wrong in other parts of the country and the world. As I write this, the death toll from super typhoon “Bopha” (Philippine name: “Pablo”) has been declared to be over 1,000 (the “missing” count is at over 800), and thousands of Filipinos will most likely spend Christmas in evacuation centers. Then, of course, there’s that shocking massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, and the unending war in the Middle East, among many other tragedies and disasters. We’re very fortunate to have homes to come home to, to have gifts to wrap, and to have loved ones with whom to celebrate the holidays.

Still, we mustn’t give up hope, and we must always believe that good will trump evil in the end. Always the optimist, idealist, and hopeless romantic, I believe that humankind will find its way of restoring peace and harmony where it is most needed. It’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be quick, but we will get there–somehow.

In the meantime, here’s a rendition of “Grown-Up Christmas List” by Danish singer Thomas Lilleøre, performing the song based on the Michael Buble cover. I hope it somehow brings a bit of cheer and hope back. 🙂
